About Kim & Busy Bee
Tucked away off a bustling street in Cordova Bay, BC, Canada, you will find our adorable urban flower farm, Busy Bee Farm & Florals.
Hi, my name is Kim Spears, and I am the owner and farmer behind Busy Bee Farm & Florals. I have been running this farm since 2017 and when COVID-19 hit, I had just left a 10 year career in professional photography to pursue flower farming full-time.
My husband Darren and I had bought this property, which is just shy of 2 acres, back in 2011 when our son was just 8 weeks old. The idea of farming was not even a thought that crossed my mind. However, the first spring we were in our home, about 30 peony plants burst into bloom and that was it — I was hooked. I immediately dove into researching peonies, and then it was David Austin English roses, and then it was dahlias, and before I knew I was completely flower obsessed.
Around this same time I had recently learned about Erin Benzakein of Floret Flower Farm and I was so inspired by everything she was doing and I was thrilled to realize that this new hobby had potential to earn a living. Simultaneously, I had made several connections with local florists over the years as we swooned over flowers together at weddings and I was delighted to be able to share my flowers with these talented florists…
Soon after, I joined Instagram and I have loved the ability to combine my two passions of photography and flowers. Eventually, with the encouragement of my sweetest followers, I decided to try to sell my flowers to the public. After seeing first-hand the joy and nostalgia my flowers brought to my first customers, I was determined to build a flower farm that showcased flowers, vines and herbs not often seen in “grocery store” bouquets. I really wanted to create an emotional connection between our customers and our "fresh from the garden" style of bouquets.
After learning how toxic most imported blooms are, I was certain I would grow our flowers free of chemicals. Having our 2 children constantly playing around the farm truly solidified that decision, and I am so proud that customers can safely bring our flowers into their homes and never have to worry about any harmful sprays on our blooms.
I am so grateful that this job has connected me to truly the best customers. I have been so moved by their dedication to supporting our farm. Additionally, I have found so much joy in sharing my gardening knowledge on Instagram and that my seed collections, dahlia tubers and gardening resources have been so well received across Canada.
I am so excited to see where this journey takes me. It has been an incredibly rewarding ride so far.
Thank you so much for being here and for supporting the local flower movement, and our farm.
